    Description: The Deputy Marshal/Patrolman is a police officer as described by Indiana statute, employed by the town and empowered by the Marshal to enforce federal, state laws and local ordinances. The Patrolmen are responsible to the Marshal, Chief Deputy, Deputy Marshal/Sergeants. Patrolmen include paid part-time officers. The Deputy Marshal/Patrolman shall perform all assigned duties in a spirit of public service and trust.

    The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

    1. Completing all forms, reports and records required by their position as a police officer. 2. Properly maintaining any and all equipment assigned to them by the department. 3. The enforcement of all laws within the officer’s jurisdiction, fairly, and impartially. 4. The observation of the constitutional rights of all citizens as is provided by the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of Indiana as interpreted by law. 5. Adherence to all rules, regulations, and policies of the department, and all orders by superior officers, unless that order is unlawful. 6. A general knowledge of all police operations. 7. A competent knowledge of department operations, criminal, civil, and juvenile laws as they apply to an officer’s duties. 8. A competent knowledge of the department records, standard operating procedures, and radio procedures. 9. Competent knowledge of the organizational structure of the department with adherence to the chain of command. 10. Familiarity with court procedures and the ability to give testimony during civil and criminal proceedings. 11. An understanding of any court decision or judgments that effect routine police duties. 12. The practice of the proper procedures for the prosecution of crime and the rules of evidence. 13. The practice of professional and competent techniques and procedures during the investigation of any incident. 14. Competent knowledge of motor vehicle law and traffic accident investigation. 15. A high regard and responsibility for personal safety. 16. A high regard and responsibility for all department equipment. 17. Competent knowledge of the general geography and public roads of the town and the county. 18. Competency and promptness in the initiation, completion, and routing of any required written forms or reports. 19. Proficiency in duty firearms and in accordance with department standards and qualifications. 20. Proper care, wearing, and appearance of the department uniform. 21. High regard for personal appearance, grooming, and personal hygiene. 22. Good interpersonal communications skills and a resistance to improper accusations, suggestions, and enticements. 23. The ability to handle stressful situations in a manner, which instills confidence in the public.
